My teaching focuses on helping students critique and think through theory in ways that guide their practice in the communication field and empower them for informed decision-making, action-oriented goals, and participation in civic life. This involves explicating and discussing complex concepts, applying these concepts to case study analyses and practical scenarios, and engaging with hands-on assignments that tie their learned skills together.
Accordingly, my teaching is based on the principle that students are fundamental agents in collectively building knowledge and inclusive environments in and outside the classroom. In my courses, I thus continuously provide students with a sense of agency and accountability for individual and group learning processes.
I have applied this approach to the courses I have taught and TAed for in undergraduate and graduate courses, such as Diversity in Public Relations (master’s level); Media, Diversity and Latine; Introduction to Human Communication (Public Speaking); Introduction to Health Communication; and Aesthetics and Mass Communication.
For me, teaching is never a static practice and is continuously transformed by different groups of students and dynamic fields of study such as media and communication. As such, my approach to teaching is always shaped by and adapted to the diverse groups of students I encounter, changes in communication theories and technologies, and contemporary issues that incite students’ curiosity and active involvement.
