Remembering Marielle Franco: A Conversation with Raiana de Carvalho
“On March 14, 2018, Marielle Franco, a Black Brazilian politician, activist, and outspoken critic of police brutality, was assassinated in Rio de Janeiro. Her murder became a catalyst and symbol of the activist work Franco worked toward during her life. Raiana de Carvalho’s award-winning paper, “Remembering, Resisting: A Rhetorical Analysis of the Memorialization of Brazilian Activist Marielle Franco on YouTube,” unpacks the way that Franco’s memory and legacy survived on social media after her murder. In this episode, Raiana and I discuss her research.”
